Creating Posts Using Windows Live Writer
This post will most likely only be of interest to other posters or bloggers.
Up until recently I compiled most of my posts using Microsoft Word 2007. I would then save the completed post from Word as a HTML file using the Word Save As option “Web page, filtered”. Then I would open the file produced by this in Notepad, copy the entire file, and paste the HTML into SquareSpace; where my site is hosted. Any minor tidying up or additions after that would be done directly in SquareSpace using the SquareSpace web editor (Yuk!!, hate editing using Web-based editors—horrid experience).
But last night I discovered Microsoft Windows Live Writer. This is a free download and install from Microsoft.
At this stage, after only using it for two posts, I am very impressed with this little application. As it is being installed it asks for the address and login credentials for your posting Web site and it then profiles how your site is structured and configured. Then you start keying up a post in the Live Writer editor on your PC.
This profiling even seems to have worked for a hosting site as sophisticated as SquareSpace.
Live Writer provides the basic tools to format your posts.
You can do font style changes like bolding, italicising, underlining, colour, font family and size changes (e.g. Arial 12, Arial 14, Arial 14 Bold, Arial 14 Bold Maroon, Harrington 12 Blue, Harrington 14 Bold Green). While this may all seem like basic stuff in word processing, it is not quite so simple in HTML for posting unless you use something like Microsoft Word, FrontPage, or Live Writer.
There are also points (numbering) . . .
- Point one.
- Point two.
and bullets at the push of a button.
- First bullet.
- Next bullet.
Inserting pictures also becomes a doddle (which means; really easy to do).
Live Writer also makes inserting and formatting tables a breeze (which means; really easy to do).
Column1 Heading | Column2 Heading | Column3 Heading |
Row 1 Col 1 data | Row 1 Col 2 data | Row 1 Col 3 data |
Row 2 Col 1 data | Row 2 Col 2 data | Row 2 Col3 data |
There are other simple things that Live Write does such as include hyperlinks.
At this stage it does enough for me so I will continue using it for the time being.
