Morawa Scene: Article 07—Moore’s Store in 1912
It has been a bit of time since my last article, but here is my seventh article for the Morawa Scene featuring the “P. H. Lodge & Sons” shop, or what will become that shop.
This article is kind of one of two articles with the next article yet to come—it will be Article 08. My plan for part 2 of this little series is to make some comment and insights in relation to the main photograph in this article.
This submission shows the shop that is to become P. H. Lodge & Sons. Based on what I can find in the ‘archives’, Percy Lodge will buy this shop from Mr. Moore around 1919 at which time he will change the signage on the front from the single shingle to two shingles—a smaller one above a larger (wider) one. The top one will say “P. H. LODGE” and the one underneath will say “POST OFFICE”.

The previous article “Skinny Hern” can be found here.
As usual, the text below under the P. H. Lodge & Sons masthead, is exactly as it is in the page published in the Morawa Scene. However the pictures/graphics are generally of a higher resolution and will show colour; whereas the Morawa Scene is printed in black and white only.
This is Part 1 of two parts I have planned relating to the picture above—which I have made as large as I can in the space available.
This is a picture of what was, at the time of this picture, the only business in Morawa being a general store owned by Samuel Moore and, at this time, most likely being operated and managed by Richard (Dick) Lyons.
Based on my research I put the date that this picture was taken at most likely being circa 1912. However the State Library has an estimate of the early 1920s. I am almost certain the State Library is wrong and that my date of 1912 is much more likely.
Why . . . Because I am 90 percent sure that P. H. (Yorkie) Lodge bought the store from Mr. Moore in 1919 as indicated by the clipping below from the book “A History of the Morawa District from 1850 – 2006” compiled by M. Walter (with the support of the Morawa Shire).
When P. H. Lodge bought the store he changed the livery/facia signage on the store front to “P. H. LODGE” with “POST OFFICE” underneath it, both of which were printed on a single simple rectangular boards. This is not the livery signage we see on the store-front in the picture (see my attempted enlargement at right). Here we can see two rectangular signs, one above the other.
To me this clearly dates the above picture sometime prior to it being purchased by Yorkie Lodge.
I used the bulk of the space on this page to put in a large version of the 1912 picture. In Part 2 (article #08) I will talk about some interesting observations and insights relating to this picture; so make sure you keep this page to refer to .
The next post in this series about Morawa and P. H. Lodge & Sons is here.
