Semi-humorous Graphs: Nutrition/Taste Ratio as Age Increases
Here is my third “Semi-humorous Graph” posting.
This idea for this plot occurred to me today as I was consuming my double ham with lettuce, tomato, and pickle Subway roll for my lunch.
I think this graph is spot on. When you are a teen or in your early 20s you really go for stuff that tastes amazing. Stuff like potato chips, chocolate, spaghetti bolognaise, pizza, Chinese, thick/milk shakes, ice cream, cakes in general. You get the idea. Really nice tasting stuff. And you kind of fib to yourself about how nutritious or good for you it probably is.
Then as you see about 30 summers go by, maybe a bit sooner, you decide that maybe you should increase the goodness ratio of the food you are eating. You begin to lower the ratio of the really nice stuff listed above and move the slider up on the ratio of the not-so-nice stuff. Stuff like peas, beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and so on.
And then at 85—if you manage to make it to 85 or more—when you are in the nursing home, they don’t give a lot of consideration to the taste so much; but they kind of need to keep you alive. So they will likely feed you the ‘good’ stuff. You know … porridge with skim milk, vegetable mash minus the potato and butter, sugar and flour free cakes (yuk), (cheap) grilled fish with no butter sauce, and, if you have been good, some of those tasty vegetarian mock-potato tofu chips*, etc.
You might not agree with me, but I feel I am getting a little better at this with each new index card graph that I do.
Going back about ten days or so it took me about ten cards before I got that first one almost, kind-of, looking like I wanted it to.
You can check out that first ever abalook semi-humorous card, which plotted the amount of pills you tend to need to consume as you get older, here.
Then I kind of improved on that a bit with my next one here. This second card, which took me seven drafts to get how I wanted it, pretty much accurately plots the chance of stuff, anything at all, falling on the floor as one’s age increases.
But today I only did three draft cards (shown at right) and then I think I got it how I wanted it on the fourth attempt.
As you can see with my latest effort, above, I have now decided I should date them with the month and year and put a small signature near the date. I am also experimenting with using a bit more colour whereas when I started I thought limited use of colour was the way to go.
When I went to Office Works and bought my pack of index cards for this project I got the 250 card pack. Not their smallest pack as I think there was a 100 card pack. But I thought 250 would keep me going until I got bored with doing it.
Going on the number of draft or test cards I go through before arriving at the one I decide is okay to post I think I should have bought the 1,000 box of cards.
* I have no idea if there is even such a thing as a mock-potato tofu chip but it sounded semi-humorous so I put it in.
