Added Category Collections to the Sidebar

As most regular readers would know my site is hosted by SquareSpace. However I hardly use any of the many nifty widgets and gadgets that SquareSpace have available. My site is very basic. Apart from one or two changes I have not added or upgraded any of the functionality since the day I cobbled it together during my 14 day trial period with SquareSpace way back around July 2009.

Somewhere around about mid- to late-2010 I changed the banner at the top, and then a couple of months ago I installed the links gadget and put some links in the sidebar. But that is about it.

Well now I have decided to include the ‘Category’ widget in my sidebar. The only problem with enabling the ‘Category’ widget is that, for it to be of any use, I need to put all of my postings into categories.

I enabled the ‘Category’ widget tonight and I then spent about an hour going through all the postings I have put up so far this year and putting them into categories—which then brings on the next difficult bit. Working out what categories to use.

The recommendation is that you have no more than about 20 categories. This recommendation might end up being a problem for me. After only putting the postings from 2012 into categories I have already created 18 categories. Somehow I think I am going to end up with more than 20 categories by the time I do 2011, and then 2010, and finally 2009. Unless I put a lot of the postings into ‘General’—which would sort of defeat the purpose of having categories.

Well tomorrow I am going to try and categorise all the 2009 and 2010 postings. I guess at the end of that chunk of work I will have a better idea how my categories are working out and how many I am likely to end up with.

I will keep you informed on how I go with this.
