Top 40 Web Searches for 2009
As part of some research I started to do in putting together an entry for my Web site (that will be titled “Needs More Sex”—but more on that in a later post) I sort of needed to check out what were the top Web searches for 2009.
In trying to find the top Web pages for 2009 I found heaps of Top 10 and Top 20 lists. Some were from Yahoo, some were from Google, some from Bing, and then there were those that related to the UK, or USA, or India, etc.
So what I have tried to do is zipper these lists together into the one world-wide all-subjects all-search engines Top 40 Web searches for 2009. The resulting list is kind of interesting so I thought as long as I had taken the time and trouble to clean and collate the data that I may as well put the list to use and post it.
In all of the searches done in building this list I did not find another aggregated list like it, so, as far as I know, this list is somewhat unique. You will only find anything like it on this site. I am not claiming that it is perfect but it has taken the better part of 1.5 days to research and compile, and all care has been taken not to include any misleading or incorrect information. If you have any gripes about where I placed one of your favourites in the list then feel free to post a comment and let me know.

Observations
I am not too sure why sites like Facebook, Tuenti, and Twitter are searched for. You would think that people would just go directly to the site (e.g. www.facebook.com or www.twitter.com). But it seems that a lot of people must go to Google or Bing, do a search, and then go to Facebook, etc., from the search results. Rather odd really. But this then explains why these sites get so high in the search terms list.
Interesting that Windows 7 makes it into the list. But on reflection I guess there probably was a huge amount of interest all through the year up until Windows 7 was finally released. Then since the release there has probably been a lot of people searching about Windows 7 to see how to upgrade, and if the computer they have can be upgraded.
I learnt a few things from this list. I had never heard of Hulu (No. 12)—not that it turns out to be that useful as it only works for users in the USA. Also the Vietnam Newspaper site Dantri (No. 10) looks interesting. I will be going back there from time to time. And the 1911 Census site in the UK, which I can only assume is what the No.22 item relates to. I have already done a few searches on distant relatives that came over from England to see if they are mentioned.
If there is a mystery search in the list it is No.17—Torpedo Gratis. If anyone knows what this is then please leave a comment. I could not find this in Wikipedia and a Google search for it really did not help. So, the obvious question is, what were people who used this search term looking for, and did they find it?
