2023 Mellenbye Adventure: Day 4—Morning

The primary objective for the fourth day at the Mellenbye Station Stay is to go out east of the homestead and check out “The Rock”.

But first I decided to cut up some wood ready for the evening camp fire. I have to admit that a good part of the fun of being at Mellenbye is sitting around a fire each evening until about 10:00 at night sipping on champagne.

One of the best ‘toys’ I have bought recently is the Ryobi 18v One+ battery operated chain saw. It came in very useful on this trip. Both for collecting wood, as you are permitted to collect any dead wood from around the property, and for cutting wood for the fire. This little chain saw gets through the dry bush wood with ease. And it doesn’t have an oil reservoir so it doesn’t leak oil in your car.

One of the pictures I took as I walked around the station stay campus was of the famous upside down bird nest tree.

Nah. That’s a fib. There is no famous upside down bird nest tree at Mellenbye. But I think it should be known as that. It is an upside down tree. And it looks like a bird’s nest on the top of it. A big bird. An eagle maybe.

I sure hope nobody decides that upside down tree is a just another dead tree and can therefore be used for firewood … and then subsequently chain saws it up and burns it!

Following are pictures of some of the accommodation options at the Mellenbye Station Stay, starting with The Manor on the Hill. Hill is actually a slight exaggeration. It is more of a slight rise. But if Western Australian’s can call something 300m high a mountain, then I guess we can call a slight rise in the ground a hill.

In cost, next down from The Manor on the Hill is the two cottages.

The two cottages are called Kimbers cottage and McDonalds cottage.

On my visit to Mellenbye with my niece we stayed in the McDonalds cottage. Although the cottages only have the one bedroom with the one queen bed, the lounge or living room has a divan style lounge that converts into a comfortable—so I am assured by my niece—queen sized bed.

Next down in cost from the cottages is the cabins. The two cabins are named Shaw’s Cabin and Artesian Cabin.

The Manor, cottages, and cabins all have there own outside camp fires.

Next is the three motel units. These are called Biddy Biddy, High Mill, and O’Haras.

Next is the three apartment units: Drought Master, Long Horn, and Short Horn.

As well as the above there are:

• Ten donga rooms—example below.

• Two rooms are available in the homestead.

• Five glamping pods—example below.

• Eight shearer’s quarters rooms.

• Numerous unpowered caravan sites.

One of the sets of donga units. This donga unit has four rooms.

One of the five glamping pods. The notes on the Mellenbye website suggest hiring glamping pods as an ensuite and power supply for a caravan or camper and there does seem to be room alongside the pods to put a caravan/camper.
