Map of the Internet (or Web): 2021 version

Every few years or so someone comes out with another view or version of some kind of “Map of the Internet”. This Map of the Internet was compiled and constructed by Martin Vargic.

I am not sure if this is actually a map of the Internet, or it is actually a map of the Web—which are two completely different things with the Web being a subset of the Internet.

As I cannot see any references to newsgroups, NNTP, or FTP, I am going to assume this is really a map of the Web rather than a map of the Internet.

Whatever …. it is a pretty impressive piece of work.

The following clip from the map drills-down on an area called the “Mountain of Memes” and features such Web sites as Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and 4Chan.

The map even features the Dark Web down there below the Hidden Sea in the area of the Peer-to-Peer Sea.

The ‘.land mass’ size provides an indication of traffic flows so ‘countries’ like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook have large land masses.

Like similar style maps from the around the 1600s, this map contains useful information around the edges. Information such as: most popular Websites; top channels on Youtube; and highest selling video games.

I have clipped the Top 20 Web sites. Reddit just makes it into the Top 20.
